Frank O’Keeffe is the Irish O.35 Mens Irish Veteran Singles Champion following his success at the championships in Limerick last weekend. Frank defeated Tony O’Shea Jn (Catholic Institute) in the finals. Earlier he had recorded a significant win over Barry McCarthy (Killaloe-Ballina) in the semi-final). Frank made it a double success when also taking the equivalent doubles title, playing with Gary Kilduff (Dublin), and defeating Barry McCarthy and Pat Bradley in the final.
Meanwhile Deirdre McSherry teamed up with Joanne Williamson (Cork) to bring a second Irish veterans title to Nenagh. Deirdre was also a singles finalist, being runner up to Irish international veteran stalwart Deirdre Collins from Limerick.
Sat May 31st, Teen Tennis Fun Evening hosted by Killaloe Tennis Club. Five of our Juniors went along and are pictured above with teenage members of Killaloe and junior committee members. A great experience for all.
Meanwhile, the line up for Division III finals is confirmed. The girls section will be a round robin involving Kyle Park, Lorrha, Toomevara and Ballinaclough. The boys will also be a round robin involving Kyle Park, Lorrha, Nenagh CBS and Ballinaclough. Play for these teams will commence at 10 am.
There was again a fine turnout of member and friends at the Permanent TSB Inter Firms Tennis League Finals at Nenagh LTC on Saturday night last. The finals were the conclusion of a 3 week long league in which up to 150 players competed on various graded teams. The finals and indeed the semi-finals on Thursday and Friday nights were a showcase for some very watchable and enjoyable tennis. Present at the finals was Paul Bruton, Manager Nenagh Permanent TSB, Pearse St, Nenagh who were the exclusive sponsors of the league. Both Anne Marie Darcy (President) and Frank O’Keeffe (Club Captain), at the presentation ceremony, thanked Paul Bruton and Permanent TSB for their generous support of the league.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Martin Ryan Frolic, Captain of Section 1 winners Kit Kat, speaking on his own behalf and on behalf of all players. Martin was also generous in his compliments to his own team, final opponents Breo, and to all the various people without whom the league would not be such a success. And in some good natured banter expressed his satisfaction in again winning the title following his enforced exit in the earlier stages last year. His team this year, all perfectly legal, were regular teammate Deirdre Collins, Brian McNamara and new lady on the team Sharon Young. Runners-up Breo (Fitzgibbon Jewellers) had a family flavour to the team with Nick Flannery and the still amazingly agile Mr Flannery – Donal to those of us of a certain generation. Anne Marie Darcy and Triona Dunne were key members of this team.
Section II was won by the Ford team with Michael Gilmartin, Brian McGahey, Mike O’Brien, Lorraine Talbot and Angela O’Dwyer – Angela here being the 3rd Flannery family member featuring in the finals. Michael Gilmartin had been on the wrong side in a number of previous finals, but taking a page from Henry Ford’s dictum that ‘history is bunk’ he obviously dismissed those previous outcomes and he and his team drove on victory. The Toyota team, ever reliable, unfortunately failed to negotiate a near finish line bump on the road on this occasion – new MEPs take note. Kieran Slattery, Michael Kennedy, Murtagh Crawford, Sarah Walsh (this season making a welcome return) and Maria Brennan will challenge again.
‘Hulk’ with Paul Scully, Brian McGrath, Kate Droney and Lisa Hogan won Section 3, a good win here achieved with no team member transforming him/herself into another ‘form’. Supermen Alan McGahy, Eoin Gleeson joined Maggie Mulqueen and Josie McGahey to make up the ‘Superman’ team, runners-up here, with Josie taking a break from organising and advancing her claims for grade promotion. It was a busy night for the McGahey’s with 3 family members, Josie, Alan and Brian featuring in finals.
Meanwhile, the Section 4 final was won by the ‘Diesel’ team of Denis Ley, Don O’Brien, Claire Ley and Any Kilcline. Runners up were ‘G Star’ which included Margaret Folan, (yes, the same Margaret Folan, Chairperson of the Junior Committee, and like Josie also taking a break from the organising arena), Meta Darcy, Julianna Slattery and Tara Shephard.
