The Permanent TSB Inter Firms Tennis League concludes this weekend, with play offs beginning on Wed night 20th May and continuing each evening, with the finals taking place on Saturday evening 23rd. The league, which has attracted a huge entry, has been a significant success thus far and the play offs and finals are certain to provide some very enjoyable tennis for anyone who comes along to the club any evening this week.
The Bar will be open on Thursday, Friday & Saturday – with the BBQ fired up on all nights. Everyone is encouraged to come down and support the teams and enjoy the fantastic tennis that’s been on display throughout the competition!
No, were not referring to Lee Majors of 1970s TV fame in ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’. Majors played Steve Austin (aka the Bionic Man), a badly injured astronaut who was given a $6M ‘rebuild’ giving him new super powered limbs and body parts including 2 legs and a right arm.
We’re now in 2015 and referring to Pat Hough. Hough has been out of the game for up to 15 years due to hip, knee and – as it happens – arm/shoulder problems, but following operations on all 3 areas (we assume for somewhat less than $6M) has made a welcome return to playing the game which he graced with such considerable success during the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s.
He always said he’d come back but we politely said ‘great’ and did not believe him. He apparently made a personal vow to regain match fitness to again play competitive tennis and to prove to himself that he could actually do it, and after a many many hours of determined fitness work has defied the odds and finally made it back. We’ll be observing that first serve with interest – if we can see it!

Meanwhile, Ballina NS defeated St Mary’s Nenagh in the semi-final of the Munster Girls Primary Schools Shield event, while Youghalarra NS, following a great run were edged out in the semi-final of the Cup event.
