It was another glorious day for Nenagh tennis fortunes at Limerick Lawn on Sunday last when the club recorded a truly remarkable 5 finals wins at the 2018 Munster Winter League finals.  Nenagh had 5 teams competing in finals and to the delight of the large body of Nenagh supporters all 5 were crowned champions.

It’s rarely that a club features so dominantly on a finals day, an achievement really of course only attainable by the big clubs.  For Nenagh, Sunday’s achievement matched a similarly glorious day in Munster tennis back in August 2009 when the club played in 6 Summer Cup Finals, winning 5, while neighbours Puckane also won a final on that day.

But back to 2018, Sunday last 25th March and the finals results in grade order.  The Gr 2 mixed team (Tara Spain (capt), Sinead O’Meara, Matthew Ryan, James Morris) defeated Whitechurch.

Nenagh had 2 teams in Gr 3 finals.  The Men (Mike O’Brien (capt), Don McLean, George Hayes, Alan D’Arcy) defeated Lower Aghada, while the ladies (Jennifer McKenna (capt) Lena Grace, Melissa Kenny, Rosemary Seymour) defeated Causeway from Dungarvan.

There were also 2 Nenagh teams in Gr 4 finals.  Here the ladies team (Sally McGrath (capt), Doireann Kennedy, Paula Kelly, Anne Murnane, Kate McKenna) were winners over Bishopstown, and the mixed team (Gemma Flynn (capt), Ciara Cairns, Mick Molloy, Tommy Riggs Miller) defeated Sunday’s Well.

It was pleasant spring day on the Ennis Road, reminiscent of the 2017 finals day at Catholic Institute on the equivalent weekend when Nenagh featured in 4 finals, winning 2 of them.  Hearthiest congratulations to all teams, officials and members!

Fifteen clubs were involved across 14 finals on the day.  It was nice to see a fine turnout of members to support the Nenagh teams and the travelling support from other clubs, which enhanced the occasion and underlined the popularity and status of the inter-club scene across the province.  Munster inter-club competitions, unlike in Leinster and Ulster, are open to all clubs in the province.
