Reminder to all Adult Club Members Friday Night Social tennis is back!
Starts this Friday at 7.30pm – Bar Open – All Welcome – details on flyer – just turn up on the night! We’ll be running these throughout the year.
After almost 3 weeks of very enjoyable tennis, played in generally excellent weather, the Permanent TSB Inter Firms finals at Nenagh LTC concluded with another great tennis and social night on Saturday last.
Over 190 players played in the league and all were thanked by Nenagh LTC President Margaret Folan and Club Captain David Hackett following the finals. Margaret, with others, also thanked Rory O’Farrell, Manager Permanent TSB, Pearse Street, Nenagh for the bank’s generous sponsorship of the League.
The league attracted a significantly broad entry which was reflected in the finals in which visiting teams won Section I, II and III finals while a further visitor line-up took the runner-up slot in Section III.
Section I was won by the ‘Oasis’ team, essentially a Killaloe-Ballina based team, with Barry McCarthy, Pat Bradley, Ursula McCarthy and Limerick lady Irene Walsh. Runners up here were the ‘Snow Patrol’ team, which despite the warm evening did not melt away, forcing the issue to the ‘super doubles’. The ‘Snow Patrol’ team comprised Helena Darcy, Niamh Kennedy, Chris Collins and Agris Strods.
Ferrari powered to victory in Section II. The Birr based temporary Italians included Karen Smith, Paula Quinlan, Noel Russell and Eddie Hogan. ‘Aston Martin’ were a good second here with Sally McGrath, Fidelma Seymour, Tommy Riggs Miller and Tom Hough upholding the honour of the British luxury car company.
Meanwhile, Section III included teams named after English Premiership clubs, and here we saw ‘Chelsea’ return to trophy winning mode. The ‘pensioners’ had a Birr/Roscrea line up with Caroline Russell, Trish Savy, Billy Woods and Tim Mounsey, none of whom we should add would be close to pensioner status in the real life.
Runners up here were ‘Stoke City’ and representing the ‘Potters’ were Gill Dunne, Naomi Cormican, Richard Brandt and Keith Mulhall, all from the Portumna Club. They at least had the consolation of Connacht winning in Edinburgh.
Section 4 was not an actual team event, but had a number of doubles pairings competing. Aoife Conneely from Portumna and Sinead Bruce from Birr won out here. Runners-up were Emma Pearce and Patricia Gibson.
