News Round-Up by Tim Conway

Deirdre and Lena Interpro Winners

Nenagh’s Deirdre McSherry and Lena O’Connor were members of the Munster team which finished a close runner-up position to Leinster in the recent Group A Veterans Inteprovincials at Galway LTC.  Deirdre and Lena, both experienced representative players, won all their respective matches, contributing handsomely to their team’s total score.

Slattery Tiles Senior Club Week

Conor and Loreto Slattery of Slattery Tiles, Springfort Retail Park, Nenagh are again sponsoring the Nenagh Senior Club Week.  The club very much appreciates the support which Conor and Loreto is giving the tournament which began at the weekend and will conclude on Saturday evening.  There’s a big entry and the club will be busy all week with lots of interesting matches.

The clubhouse will be open and apparently the BBQ will be back in business later in week.  Presumably we’ll be back to paper plates after the ‘fine dining dishware’ of the recent President’s Prize event!

Major Weekend of Nenagh Tennis Teams

This coming Sunday will be another major occasion for Nenagh tennis when the club will contest 3 Munster Summer Cup finals, among them the most prestigious inter-club event in Munster Tennis, the Munster Senior Cup, an event which dates back to 1907 and has engraved on it the names of most of the top clubs and names in Munster tennis, including some now sadly defunct clubs (although some would have subsumed into other clubs or amalgamated with neighbouring clubs).  And of course, given its long history, many players whose names are engraved on the cup are now long departed this earthly life.

Nenagh defeated St Anne’s Waterford in the semi-final.  This will be Nenagh’s second appearance in the final, having also contested the 2014 final.  Nenagh will play Crosshaven, a club equally intent of creating it’s own bit of history, on Sunday.  The Nenagh team will be Frank O’Keeffe, Robert Carkill, Anne-Marie Darcy and Lena O’Connor.

As an aside, Tony O’Donoghue of Limerick Lawn did a history of the Munster Senior Cup about 15 years ago and alluded to the fact that one of provinces biggest and oldest clubs, Sunday’s Well  did not win it until 1980, even though the club’s name adorns other cups down the years.  The writer would suggest Pat Hough, June Parker or Anne Fitzpatrick might know the answer !

Nenagh will also be contesting the Grade 5 Mixed Final and the Gr 6 Ladies Final, two team events which have assumed significant importance over the years and which are highly desired inter club pennants and consequently are extremely difficult to win.  The mixed team is Claire Ley, Mick Molloy, Lorraine Talbott and Niall Healy, and the ladies team is Lena Grace, Richelle Treacy, Eimear Gleeson and Emma Kearns.

We wish all teams well.  The finals are in Limerick Lawn, making it convenient for us to go and support them on what, regardless of results, will be a great day for the club.  Times of play will be on the club’s Facebook page.

Nenagh Players’s Larkspur Successes

A large number of Nenagh and Puckane players travelled to the recent Larkspur Park Cashel Open Week and many featured prominently.   In fact Nenagh/Puckane players appeared in 7 finals, with 4 titles coming our way.

They were represented in all 3 Gr 1-2 finals.  In an all Nenagh ladies final, Anne-Marie Darcy and Emma Mulqueen defeated Lena and Noelle O’Connor.  Frank O’Keeffe and Puckane veteran Donal Flannery  won the mens title, while Matthew Ryan and Sinead Dunne (Lattin) won the mixed.

Denis Ley and Michael Ryan were final winners in their grade as were Templemore ladies Marie Holly and Reidin Fogarty.

Sharon Young was r-up in 2 finals, ladies with Gemma Flynn and mixed with John Ryan, losing out to Birr man Aidan O’Gorman and Anne Ryan (New Inn) that final, while John Sheehy and Lisa Givens were also mixed finalists in their grade.
