A Sportsman’s  Dream Tennis Championships by Tim Conway

Dermot and Emma Foley Outstanding Players

Brother and Sister, Dermot Foley and Emma Foley from Killaloe were the outstanding performers at the ‘A Sportsman’s Dream’ sponsored North Tipperary Open Tennis Championships at Nenagh last week, each winning 3 titles.

Dermot won the boys U.16 and U.18 singles titles and joined Oisin Fahy to take the U.16 doubles title.

Emma Foley also achieved 2 singles successes, winning the Girls U.14 and U.16 titles.  She then teamed up with Manus Heenan to win the U.14 mixed, as they did recently in TippTown.

Limerick Lawn players Roisin Moore and Eunan Gavin were also in top form, winning their respective singles titles at U.12 and then joining up to annex the mixed.   Also at U.12 level, Carla Moran, a Dublin girl with Nenagh connections, won the girls doubles (with Sarah McRedmond) and was a runner up in singles and mixed (with Louie O’Carroll).

Thomas Kemmy (Limerick) was also to forefront, winning the boy’s U.14 title and doubles (with Richy Barron).

Niosa Minogue was winner of the annual special award from the tournament committee for ‘overall outstanding contribution to the tournament’.   His award was sponsored by Kemmy Stonecraft Awards, Limerick.

It was another successful Junior Open Week which attracted a big entry from a wide circle of clubs, including a number of players with Nenagh connections whose parents were former members of Nenagh.

Anne Marie Darcy, President Nenagh LTC, speaking at the presentation on Saturday evening, welcomed Deirdre Hughes, from ‘A Sportsman’s Dream’, Nenagh, long standing and generous sponsors of the Nenagh Junior Open Week.

Anne Marie complimented Mary Ryan (tournament referee) and Margaret Folan and Frank O’Keeffe (tournament directors) on completion of yet another successful and enjoyable Junior Open Week.   She also thanked the many others including players, club junior committee and parents for their support and co-operation.
