Two Irish Vets Titles for Deirdre McSherry – Lena O’Connor also wins title
Deirdre McSherry became a dual Irish Veteran Tennis Champion when she won 2 titles at the recent Irish Indoor Vets Championships at the David Lloyd Centre in Belfast. She won a singles title and then joined Siobhan Riordan from Lakewood in Cork to win a ladies doubles title. Remarkable achievement indeed and well done Deirdre.
Well done also to Lena O’Connor who reached 2 finals, winning a doubles title with Aoife O’Neill, defeating Deirdre Collins and Louise Carmody (St Anne’s) and losing out in a tie breaker in one of the singles finals, having earlier achieved a significant win over her doubles partner and former Irish senior international Aoife O’Neill in the semi-final.
Clearys Spring Doubles
The first finals night of the year will take place on this Friday night 11th March when the Clearys Spring Doubles will conclude. The play offs go ahead Thurs. The clubhouse will be open from Thursday onwards and the organizers are anticipating a good turnout, particularly on the finals night.
Two Nenagh Teams in Munster Finals
Nenagh had 2 teams in semi-final action over the weekend and both made it through to the finals. On Saturday one of the club’s Gr 5 mixed teams defeated Monaleen, courtesy of a reverse mixed play off after the sides finished the normal rubbers at 2 all. The team was Gemma Flynn, Sharon Young, John Ryan and Mike Molloy. Sharon Young and Mike Molloy played the reverse decider.
Meanwhile in poor weather conditions in Nenagh on Sunday, Nenagh and Puckane played some wonderful tennis in the semi-final of the Mens Gr 3 event, with the result going 3/1 in favour of Nenagh. It was somewhat of a unique occasion with players on both sides having represented the opposite clubs at various times over the years.
Nenagh team was Gary White, Brian McNamara, Aiden Delaney and Brian McGahey. Puckane had George Hayes, Michael O’Brien, Martin Ryan Frolic, and Don McLean. I’m not sure which side Josie was supporting on the day!
Nenagh has 3 further teams in semi-final action next weekend. The Gr 3 ladies are away to Crosshaven A, the Gr 6 Ladies are away to Tralee, while Gr 5 mixed host Ballinlough.
