Puckane continued its run of success last week when the club ‘surprisingly’ won the Acorn Life Captains’ Cup event (between Nenagh and Puckane clubs) in Puckane on Saturday last. This writer expected otherwise, but all credit to Donal Flannery, the village outfit’s captain, who had cannily assembled (and poached) a stellar line-up and following an enjoyable day’s tennis got his team into the winner’s enclosure, but only just, as it took a ‘super-doubles’ decider to get a winner, as Nenagh captain David Hackett also had assembled an equally stellar outfit which kept the issue in doubt until the end.
We jest re the result as this event of course is a social event between 2 neighbouring clubs and as such there was plenty of banter among the participants and onlookers. There was a lovely atmosphere in the attractive Puckane club setting and on a cold day most appreciated the hot tasty food treats cooked by Donal (not Skehan, and certainly not Rachel) Flannery).
The day’s programme of play as devised by Donal and David worked very well, with 4 matches in each of 5 grades, and remarkably after the allocated 20 matches, it was 10 wins each, hence the ‘super-doubles’ in which Puckane’s Brian McGahy and Beatrice Morrissey (who else would you put in?) just about triumphed (against the run of play really!) over David Hackett and Caroline White by 7/5. The culmination of the day was a great karaoke night in Kennedy’s bar afterwards, and it merely remains for us to congratulate Puckane for winning the cup for 2016 and indeed for the club’s very successful year.
Saturday saw the finals of the Cinnamon Alley Junior Autumn Doubles. The finals were held after the last couple of weeks of matches – thanks to the Junior Committee and Parents for arranging everything so smoothly!!!
A warm thanks once again to Marie Nagle and Cinnamon Alley for sponsoring the event and coming down to visit on Saturday. Well done to all the winners, runners-up and all those that competed this year.
