Sisters Emma Brennan and Lucy Brennan were the winners of the 2013 Maloney Cup at Nenagh LTC on Sunday last. Runners-up were Alicia White and Abbey Sharkey.
The Maloney Cup was presented to the club some years ago by the late Frances Maloney to promote junior tennis and it has been a much sought after prize over the years.
Sadly Frances, affectionately known to many as Tutsie, passed away during the 2012 Christmas period. Nenagh LTC were especially pleased that her daughter Gail O’Meara was present on Sunday last to make the presentations.
Once again the Tadgh O’Flynn Classic was a roaring success thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who entered. Our thanks go to our sponsor.
The finals were hotly contested between Jelly Tots V Roses, Lucozade V Pepsi, Genesis V U2 and Kit Kat v Whole Nuts – well done to all who competed and a great social night was had by all.
The 2013 winners were Sarah Seymour and Oisin Fahy. Runners-up were Ciara Dwan and Anthony Maher.
The Anne Fitzpatrick also seeks to promote junior tennis in the club and the competition alternates yearly with the Maloney Cup in being played for the by the older and younger juniors. This year it was available to the older juniors and Anne was on hand to make the presentation to the winners and runners-up.
The Junior Autumn Doubles, sponsored by Cinnamon Alley Café, Hanley’s Place, Nenagh, (Prop: Marie Nagle), commenced on this Monday and will run until Sunday 10th November.
The draw sheets and contact details are on the notice board and players arrange their own matches. They have until 6 pm on Saturday evening 9th November to complete their matches. The finals and play offs if necessary will follow on the Sunday.
Beginning on Sunday next there will be a series of 4 sessions for senior players wishing to play and improve their doubles play. The concept known as ‘Progressive Doubles’ is for recreational/social players in Munster Grades 4-7. Coach Frank O’Keeffe will be on hand each evening to offer tips/advice on doubles play.
